What is the SMART Program?

The Benson-Henry Institute for Mind Body Medicine is located at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, MA.Here, practitioners teach patients to counteract stress and build resiliency by eliciting what we now know as the "Relaxation Response."
The opposite of "Fight or Flight."


Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) involves education regarding the understanding of how your brain processes information leading to the “stress response.” We learn to recognize your personal response to stress.  Then combining skill building and twenty years as a cognitive behavioral therapist we learn to elicit the “Relaxation Response” to antidote stress.  The program is taught over the course of 8 weeks with emphasis on wellness, goal setting, exercise, diet, sleep, social support.

Stress Management and Resiliency Training (SMART) was developed by Dr. Herbert Benson MD, a cardiologist and true pioneer in Mind Body Medicine. This course will provide you with the latest research and practical skill sets to help you incorporate these elements into your lifestyle, guiding you in the use of self-care techniques in mind-body approaches like meditation, cognitive skills and positive psychology.

An impressive set of evidence now supports mind-body medicine to improve—and in some cases, prevent—stress-related illnesses like hypertension, anxiety, addiction and pain syndromes.

Course Description

Mind Body Medicine Can Improve Your Treatment Outcomes for a Wide Range of Stress-Related Illnesses:
  • Learn self-care skills to buffer daily stress
  • Understand the connection between stress and physical or emotional health
  • Understand your body’s physiologic and emotional response to stress
  • Recognize stress warning signals
  • Build resiliency

Stress management And Resiliency Program (SMART) is an 8-week educational and skills development course that delivers an integrated model of care. We will learn about mind body interactions, skill development, and deliverable tools ready made to support using your lifestyle as medicine.

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define the body’s response to stress, known as allostasis and allostatic load, and the role it plays in the development or exacerbation of medical conditions

  • Recognize how lifestyle modification builds resiliency

  • Develop skills in a variety of meditation methods that elicit the “relaxation response”

  • Develop strategies to lower your risk of diseases related to stress from cardiovascular to gastrointestinal

  • Apply mind body interventions in the treatment of multiple disease symptomatology

  • Improve your ability to motivate towards sustainable behavior change

  • Deliver a more effective, integrative model of care

  • Use newfound skills and tools to improve mood and sleep

  • Identify the components of the Benson-Henry care model

  • Support healthcare changes designed to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases

  • Define the underlying influences of happiness

  • Formulate a more integrative model of patient care

  • Experience a variety of healing modalities


A 2015 preliminary study found that patients who participated in the SMART Program reduced their medical visits on average by 43% in the year after taking part.


Appointment Options


Group Appointments

Group appointments are 2 hour weekly sessions that include the Stress Management and Resiliency Training curriculum but also allow for group process and social support. Groups are organized by age: Young Adult age 17-24 and Adult age 25-35 and 35 up. Group size ranges from 3-25.
